Yoga is an ancient Sanskrit word that translates literally to "yoking" or "uniting". These days in the West we mostly use the term to describe a physical practice, but traditionally its meaning is holistic. It denotes a comprehensive method for developing vitality and freedom. Yoga is the practice and process of integrating ourselves as human beings. To me, this implies bringing meditation - full awakeness - into motion and into our lives.

Considering the depth and significance (not to mention the challenge) of this, it also implies a life-long journey with many changes and ups and downs along the way. Through the practices of postures, breath, concentration and meditation we bring together our bodies, hearts and minds. Over time, we begin to live from our deepest integrity. Our fragmented sense of self fuses into one luminous experience.

The wonderful things is, while this description might sound lofty, yoga can fit the needs of anyone who wishes to try it. The practice has a variety of very concrete, present day benefits, as described in the list above.

You can come to yoga with any body type, flexible or inflexible, strong or weak, at any age, with injuries or largely healthy. Compared in terms of "more" or "less", all bodies are different, but seen in the light of the laws of nature, all bodies are similar. Ultimately, yoga serves to align us with those natural laws, bringing a greater sense of ease to heart and mind.

Whatever one’s primary reason for studying yoga may be, the longer one continues to practice, the more its positive effects deepen, strengthen and multiply, bringing one into closer harmony with one’s true nature.
